Boston, MA: Tulip, the leader in frontline operations, announced today that it has been named a Challenger in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). Tulip is the only no-code platform, focused on citizen development to achieve this recognition among the 18 vendors selected, a testament to the market shift away from monolithic, on-premise MES, and towards modern, cloud-based approaches.

“Industries within the Frontline Operations category, including Manufacturing and Life Sciences, are fundamentally heterogeneous and complex. Tulip’s inclusion in this report is recognition that the old way of doing things, typically by employing siloed, MES-centric approaches, is slow, expensive, and obsolete” said Natan Linder, Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer of Tulip. “No-code offers a much better way of doing the work of a traditional MES. Tulip’s cloud-based platform is purpose-built for these operational environments.”

The Gartner Magic Quadrant is awarded to vendors, within a specific market segment, based on Gartner’s measurement criteria analyzing the Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute.

The 2021 report states that:

  • “Tulip’s no-code, cloud-based platform is an enabler for MES applications. It is designed to support industrial operations and allows industrial engineers to customize and extend without IT involvement. Its flexibility and ease of use reduce customization, deployment, maintenance costs, risk and complexity.”
  • “Tulip uses a different approach to integrate with production equipment, based on a growing library of edge devices and HTTP API, SQL, and OPC/UA connectors that reduce the effort for system integration. Tulip Interfaces ships its own edge devices or can work with supported 3rd party gateways.”

Over the last year, Tulip has evolved its product, adding no-code Vision capabilities, and adding low-cost Edge MC to its growing family of edge devices. It also invested heavily in its self-serve ecosystem to support customers during the pandemic. The company offers free courses and certifications via Tulip University, an open Community forum for users to engage and learn from each other, and a library of downloadable, best-in-class applications and connectors.

Customers want powerful, connected tools that are intuitive to use, flexible to update, and provide a faster time-to-value. Tulip’s capabilities shine in these areas. The company has a 4.9 out of 5 star average across its 38 customer reviews on Gartner’s Peer Insights platform.

Common review themes are ease of use, speed to deploy, and time to value, as one reviewer writes, “The Tulip platform has continually delivered value to our business and help[s] us drive digital innovation on the factory floor. Through an impressive set of tools and capabilities, we are able to adapt the system to current needs, giving us agility we’ve never had, and a richness of data we are only beginning to explore. We’ve found users are quick to learn and have been quite creative in using it to solve real problems.”

These areas are challenging for MES vendors that rely heavily on customized, on-premise solutions, maintained and serviced by professional services providers and typically deployed over months or years.

Tulip has signed on some of the world’s leading industrial companies. The company is projecting significant growth driven by increased demand for cloud-based digital transformation after a challenging year for manufacturing.
